Is A.V.A.T.A.R. Total Hip robotic surgery?

No. It is intriguing to imagine replacing human joints using artificial intelligence, augmented reality, and robotics, and that future may come. However, the latest published evidence suggests that the robotic-arm systems used in joint replacement over the past 15 years have produced more drawbacks than benefits. They are not what many patients have been led to believe.

How long should a hip replacement last?

Our goal is a hip that lasts 25 to 30 years with no pain and no limitations. We use implant systems we can customize to your unique anatomy, which improves our ability to restore function and deliver a durable, stable hip. Long-term results are the priority.

What makes A.V.A.T.A.R. Total Hip recovery faster?

A.V.A.T.A.R. is our enhanced recovery program built around better education, better preparation, better pain management, and earlier "up and go." We pair that with muscle-sparing, minimally invasive techniques through small incisions (less tissue trauma, less to heal) and we get patients moving the day of surgery. The recovery is planned in advance so nothing falls through the cracks. As we like to say, education is our blockbuster drug.

Will I have activity restrictions after hip replacement?

Modern hip replacement allows very few restrictions. Hip replacement is considered one of the most successful operations in all of medicine, and with our rapid-recovery program, patients are getting back to what they love faster than ever, especially active and athletic individuals.

What minimally invasive hip options do you offer?

We are the only practice in New Hampshire currently offering all of the muscle-sparing and minimally invasive surgical techniques, including the Mini Posterior approach, the SuperPATH approach, and the Direct Anterior approach. We match the technique to your anatomy and goals rather than forcing one approach on every patient.

Does the surgical approach (anterior vs. posterior) really matter?

It matters less than most people are led to believe. While there has been a lot of marketing around different approaches, the more recent studies comparing anterior and posterior show very little to no difference in speed of recovery or final outcome. What actually drives a great result is the quality of the surgery, the precision of the reconstruction, and the durability of the implant. We would rather optimize for the next 30 years than the next 30 days.
